https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21343 (M) of the critical state line. It is demonstrated that: (a) appropriate site investigation, soil testing and interpretation of the test results are essential for accurate prediction of the behaviour of an earth structure constructed on soft clayey deposits; (b) when using a soil model developed within the framework of Critical State Soil Mechanics to make such predictions, M value should be directly determined from tests with an appropriate effective stress path; and (c) yield stresses of soft soil layers can be calibrated by comparing the predicted undrained shear strengths (Su) with measured values, provided the effect of strain rate and/or strain softening on the value of Su is properly considered. The results of this analysis indicate that Bjerrum’s strain rate correction factor can be adopted as a first approximation of the correction factor applied to field or laboratory measured values of Su.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:51:29 AEDT ]]> Cyclic in-plane shear behaviour of unreinforced masonry walls with openings https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:18815 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:51:00 AEDT ]]> Compressive properties of corevo® foam under uni-axial loading based on experimental and numerical analysis https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:18517 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:50:21 AEDT ]]> Three-dimensional computer analysis of white shark jaw mechanics: how hard can a great white bite? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5620 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:49:20 AEDT ]]> High-speed serial-kinematic AFM scanner: design and drive considerations https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5988 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:49:07 AEDT ]]> Model-based vibration suppression in piezoelectric tube scanners through induced voltage feedback https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5985 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:49:07 AEDT ]]> Review of circular flexure hinge design equations and derivation of empirical formulations https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5091 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:48:49 AEDT ]]> The vector of jaw muscle force as determined by computer-generated three dimensional simulation: a test of Greaves' model https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5356 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:44:00 AEDT ]]> On the mechanical anisotropy of the compressive properties of aluminium perlite syntactic foam https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:27353 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:39:37 AEDT ]]> Toward integration of geometric morphometrics and computational biomechanics: New methods for 3D virtual reconstruction and quantitative analysis of finite element models https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:25266 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:38:16 AEDT ]]> A refined finite element analysis on the vibrational properties of ideal and degenerated carbon nanostructures https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30105 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:37:56 AEDT ]]> Modelling of an innovative rail conveyor system https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30055 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:31:14 AEDT ]]> Design, modeling, and characterization of an XY nanopositioning stage constructed from a single sheet of piezoelectric material https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28561 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:28:44 AEDT ]]> Influence of combined loading on the structural stability of carbon nanotubes https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28013 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:27:20 AEDT ]]> Supermodeled sabercat, predatory behavior in Smilodon fatalis revealed by high-resolution 3D computer simulation https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:3448 150 years of study, many questions remain concerning its predatory behavior. Were the “sabers” used to take down large prey? Were prey killed with an eviscerating bite to the abdomen? Was its bite powerful or weak compared with that of modern big cats? Here we quantitatively assess the sabercat's biomechanical performance using the most detailed computer reconstructions yet developed for the vertebrate skull. Our results demonstrate that bite force driven by jaw muscles was relatively weak in S. fatalis, one-third that of a lion (Panthera leo) of comparable size, and its skull was poorly optimized to resist the extrinsic loadings generated by struggling prey. Its skull is better optimized for bites on restrained prey where the bite is augmented by force from the cervical musculature. We conclude that prey were brought to ground and restrained before a killing bite, driven in large part by powerful cervical musculature. Because large prey is easier to restrain if its head is secured, the killing bite was most likely directed to the neck. We suggest that the more powerful jaw muscles of P. leo may be required for extended, asphyxiating bites and that the relatively low bite forces in S. fatalis might reflect its ability to kill large prey more quickly, avoiding the need for prolonged bites.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:20:26 AEDT ]]> On the thermal conductivity of sintered metallic fibre structures https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23736 72.5%).
